The CBI today sent summons to Special Director of Intelligence Bureau Rajinder Kumar in connection with the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, the first time when an IB involvement in a criminal case has ever been questioned in the country. Earlier last week TEHELKA had reported that the CBI had informally questioned Rajinder Kumar.
TEHELKA was the first to have provided evidence against IB officials not just in the Ishrat Jahan case, but also in the Sadiq Jamal case which was taken into consideration by the CBI. The Supreme Court monitored SIT, which is investigating the case, also arrested DIG Gujaratpolice DG Vanzara in the case. Vanzara was already in custody of the Gujarat police for his role in two other encounters. Another major blow to the state police was the dismissal of the petition filed by ADG PP Pande by the Supreme Court which now paves the way for his arrest in the Ishrat Jahan case.
According to the Gujarat Police, Ishrat Jahan, 19, and three others had been shot dead on 15 June 2004 in an encounter. In November 2011, an SIT was formed on the direction of the Gujarat High Court to investigate into the encounter. The SIT submitted its report calling the encounter fake. Following the report, the High Court ordered an FIR to be filed against 21 policemen, including Vanzara and NK Amin, both senior IPS officials and the then Joint Commissioner of Police, PP Pande.

Ahmedabad: The CBI, investigating the 2004 fake encounter case of Ishrat Jahan and three others, has filed an application in the special court in Ahmedabad to declare absconding accused IPS officer PP Pandey as a 'proclaimed offender'. The central agency filed an application before the special CBI court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) HS Khutwad on Tuesday and sought court's directions to declare Pandey, who is alluding arrest since last month, as a proclaimed offender under section 82 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
